Weekend Happenings

This week we’re prepping to hit the road and show our PDX Pride in Sacramento, California. We don’t know who should be more excited, us or them. Because, well, it’s California. But, well, we know how to throw down too. This is just one of many Pride events we’ll be partaking in for the summer, so if you’re planning a road trip, make sure to find our booth for a chance to win a deluxe vacation package, brought to you by yours truly and our near and dear Travel Portland partners. Cali or bust, baby! For those of you who are holding down the home front, we’ve rounded up a few activities to keep your envy at bay. ;) Enjoy!

Happening this week:

Rose Festival City Fair

  • Last year the Portland Rose Festival was named the Best Festival in the World by the International Festivals and Events Association. This year it is well on its way, as it officially kicked off on May 20th, and this will mark the second weekend of the amazing metropolitan City Fair. Seated squarely at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the gates will be open from 3:00PM to 11:00PM today and tomorrow, as well as from 11:00AM to 11:00PM Saturday and Sunday. It’s your best bet to get regional beer, live exotic animals, carnival rides and local shopping in one fell swoop.
  • Commemorate the life of influential feminist poet Adrienne Rich with the Katherine Salzmann and other members of Portland’s literary community tonight from 7:00PM – 9:00PM at the First Unitarian Church. The memorial, to be held in the Buchan Reception Room, will include short readings and testimonials from some of Adrienne’s Portland friends, as well as from those who attend the gathering. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite piece of the late poet’s work to share. All are welcome to attend the event free of charge. Snaps to that.
  • Get a head start on Pride Season with a Sugar Town Pride Month Kickoff Party at the Spare Room. Whip out your best and brightest 60s and 70s-inspired garb, and round up your pink pony for a ride to the rhythm and blues dance party on Saturday, June 2nd. A $5 cover gets you and your allies entrance to the candy-covered party from 9:00PM to 1:00AM with DJ Action Slacks and queer icon DJ Beyondadoubt, plus the first 20 guests get a free compilation record.
